News broke over the weekend of an injury to 135lb contender Ricky Hernandez who was set to face David Gallegos on December 17th’s FINAL CONFLICT, Fight Card Entertainment’s 43rd event to hit the Joliet area. The match up was a rematch as Gallegos, the defending champion, took a loss to Hernandez months before gaining the FIGHTCARD Bantamweight title but fought at a higher weight class for a different promotion.
Hernandez trained hard and sparred hard for this upcoming match up but ultimately, it was a workplace injury that subdued the fighter from one of his biggest fights up-to-date. Although Hernandez suffered a knee injury last week, Ricky looked to see how he felt for practice on Monday before officially bowing out of his championship match up. Late Monday night, a Facebook message from Team Full Mount Head Coach Bob Stewart read, “(Ricky) wasn’t able to work out in boxing sessions today, unfortunately I think Ricky needs to nurse it for the rest of the year.”
Co-owner Brian Angelo who is preparing for FIGHTCARD43 Press Conference tomorrow night stated, “If people wondered why Hernandez was put in their for the title against Gallegos. One, he beat him before and two, Ricky is tough as nails. Come on, he had an injury where his knee is messed up and can hardly walk. What does Ricky say? Wait til Monday to see how I feel and then shows up on Monday for practice trying to train with one leg. He didn’t sit there and cry or even think of backing out of the fight. He’s definitely a competitor and I’m sure we’ll see him back soon.”
There were no comments made of a last minute replacement but more of a “Title Fight On Hold” response with over 10 matches set for next week. Tickets for FIGHTCARD43 on sale online or FREE tickets given away at tomorrow’s Press Conference at Hollywood Casino in Joliet at 7pm.
